The illustrations are not as realistic and beautiful as I might ask in an ideal world, but do have a certain cuteness. The original If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is tolerable in my opinion (though not handsome enough to be a favorite for me). However, I reluctantly had to conclude most of this series needed to disappear in the night from our bookshelf. Something about the short phrases on each page, the simple, sequential story, or the animals’ antics amuses children. I will admit that my little ones were instantly captivated by these books. I was quite disappointed when I began reading them to my own kids. So I bought several of the “If you give…” books by Laura Numeroff sight unseen. (For example, If You Give a Chimp Some Chips, If You Give a Dog a Bone, etc.) Have your students write their stories in an accordion-folded pop-up art book that they create. Write a sequel to the story using a different animal and sequence of events. Here is an example of a scavenger hunt that may help you organize the game. Host a scavenger hunt to locate the objects that the mouse demands in the story. They can also use this comparison chart graphic organizer to organize their thoughts and ideas. Your students can then make a picture chart reflecting the similarities and differences between them. Read the author's sequels to this story: If You Give a Moose a Muffin and If You Give a Pig a Pancake.
Make a class collage of the pictures, or arrange the pictures in sequential order so your students can retell the story using those images. Students can play charades to act out the parts of the story.Īssign each child to draw or paint a picture of one of the things the mouse demands. If the students make duplicate pictures, they can play "Go Fish" or "Concentration."
